World renowned illustrated publisher Thames & Hudson has an exciting and rare vacancy for a dynamic, experienced publishing professional to join our Photography list. Reporting to the Editorial Director, Photography, you will manage projects from acquisition through to publication, striving to ensure that every book realizes the highest standards of quality and creativity, while remaining in accordance with the schedule, budget, production specification and publishing vision.

 

 

The successful candidate will bring proven expertise in project management, development and scheduling, as well as hands on editorial experience across all stages of illustrated book making. A strong track record of working collaboratively with authors, photographers and freelancers is essential. Experience of complex illustrated book production processes, standards and workflows is desirable.

 

 

The Role

 

 

Commissioning support, including:

  • Research (text/image content; authors; competing titles, etc)
  • Prepare P&Ls and book costings
  • Prepare draft contracts in collaboration with T&H’s legal team
  • Develop editorial content and book structure
  • Manage and organize book materials (images, text) and keep these in good order on our server
  • Track author/contributor progress via regular and proactive communication
  • Assess text submissions and if necessary, work with contributors to develop texts to a suitable standard
  • Draft cover and AI copy

 

 

List management and admin, including:

  • Prepare and drive book schedules
  • Lead Work in Progress, Planning and Briefing meetings, taking minutes as required and actioning follow up
  • Attend and contribute to other meetings including Book Fair Presentations
  • Maintain up to date title records in our Libro publishing system
  • Assign titles to suitable project editors, in consultation with the Editorial Director (Associate), Photography and the Publishing Programme Director
  • Commission, brief and manage editorial freelancers; negotiate freelance fees and terms
  • Monitor project progress, regularly checking in with project editors, designers, and production teams, and pro-actively troubleshooting to keep timelines on track
  • Manage book budgets
  • Ensure timely supply of high-quality sales material to Comms, Rights and T&H Inc. (US)
  • Communicate unavoidable schedule slippages in a prompt and decisive manner
  • Some general administrative tasks (book orders, author payments)
  • Submit weekly timesheets

 

Line management: 

  • Day to day joint line management of the Assistant Editor, Fashion and Photography and the Editorial Assistant, Fashion and Photography
  • Managing freelancers, including, but not limited to, project editors, copy editors, proofreaders and indexers

 

 

Knowledge, skills and experience:  

  • Experience at project lead/project editor level of editorial of producing complex, illustrated publications on time and within budgets
  • Proven ability to manage a significant number of projects simultaneously at various stages of development, from costings and contract stage through to publication, monitoring and
    co-ordinating all parties involved, including in house teams and freelancers
  • Outstanding, confident, diplomatic, pro-active and reliable communication, teamwork and management skills
  • Experience of working with authors, artists, photographers and other external contributors and content providers, handling their needs sensitively, yet firmly and with confidence
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of complex illustrated book production workflows and technical standards
  • Experience of production costings and P&Ls and an understanding of the commercial realities and contexts of book publishing
  • Experience of working with or drafting publishing and contributor agreements
  • An interest and knowledge of the photography world T&H publications originate from and the audiences they are published targeted at
  • Strong visual sense
  • Outstanding eye for detail
  • Strong skills in Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Suite
  • The ability to balance perfectionism with pragmatism, firmness with flexibility, and to juggle a substantial workload calmly and constructively

Thames & Hudson is the leading global publisher of illustrated books on all aspects of human creativity, the visual arts, history and popular culture.

 

We are seeking a dynamic Financial Controller to lead our UK Accounting and Finance Operations, managing a team of eight and reporting to the Finance Director.  The role is responsible for producing the consolidations and group financial statements, acts as the lead on tax, and has ownership of all finance IT systems and processes. 

 

 

The Role

 

Financial accounting

  • Preparation of the consolidations and of the group financial statements for Thames & Hudson Ltd, Thames & Hudson Publishing Ltd and Thames &
    Hudson (Holdings) Ltd
  • Ownership of the balance sheet; review and/or preparation of all balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring variances are investigated and resolved
  • Management of the external audit process, acting as the main point of contact for the auditors (currently PwC) and preparing and/or reviewing deliverables
  • Management of the cost accounting function, ensuring work to review & close out product costings progresses steadily throughout the year

 

Taxation

  • Ownership of the relationship with our external Tax partners, reviewing their tax computations and accounting
  • Provision of tax advice within T&H Ltd
  • Review of monthly VAT and IOSS returns, and of annual PSA and P11D returns

 

Management Accounting, Reporting & Control

  • Review of monthly management accounts and quarterly board reports, ensuring a thorough understanding of the data, and preparing commentaries and insights where appropriate
  • Review & sign-off of the monthly UK payroll and of payments to 2-3 staff
    based in Europe
  • Daily cash-flow management
  • Proactive working capital management; participation in credit control meetings
  • Support to heads of department / senior managers in reviewing financial performance and in finding solutions to finance/accounting issues
  • Management and control of costs across the company, challenging spend where appropriate
  • Provision of reports/data to the parent company

 

Team management

  • Manage a team of eight (six direct reports), covering all aspects of operational finance including management and financial accounting, accounts payable
    and receivable, cost accounting, distributed publishers and royalty
    management
  • Recruitment to the team as required and ongoing mentoring/coaching for team development

 

IT/ Systems & Processes

  • Ownership of all finance IT systems, including Sage X3 and Power BI
  • Own the relationship with Acuity
  • Continually look for opportunities to improve working practices

 

Other responsibilities

  • Review proposed weekly payment runs; review and authorize payments in Barclays.net
  • Deputise for the FD

 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • ACA Qualified Accountant, with significant post-qualification experience gained in industry
  • Significant experience managing a team
  • Strong technical accounting skills, including knowledge of UK GAAP
  • Experience preparing or reviewing multi-currency international consolidations & group financial statements
  • Solid understanding/experience of tax, particularly VAT (ideally including
    international trade) and UK Corporation Tax
  • Good organizational skills; ability to prioritise and structure work to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing, including the ability to explain financials to non-financial people
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel including pivot tables, vlookups etc
  • Able to exercise discretion with access to sensitive information
  • Commercial acumen and someone able to quickly acquire comprehensive business knowledge to ensure financial accuracy
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels inside and outside the organization
  • Experience of publishing or of media /creative industry (useful, but not essential)
  • Experience of stock accounting (useful, but not essential)
