Medieval Literature expert Professor Carolyne Larrington reveals the historical inspiration behind George RR Martin’s fantasy novels and the HBO mega-hit series, <i>Game of Thrones</i>. Exploring giants, dragons and direwolves in medieval texts and ravens, old gods and the Weirwood in Norse myth, she explains how Martin constructed a fantasy world out of the Middle Ages.

Carolyne Larrington is Professor of Medieval European Literature, University of Oxford, and Official Fellow and Tutor, St John’s College. She is the author of The Norse Myths: A Guide to the Gods and Heroes.
